The Gisborne Herald

ICONIC British newspaper The Guardian has compiled a list of the ultimate new year getaways - and right there, second only to Paris, is Gisborne.
The liberal newspaper describes Gisborne as being the first place on Earth to see in the New Year.
"This year, the Rhythm & Vines festival on the Waiohika estate will see performances from the Kooks, Franz Ferdinand and Carl Cox. There are 120 performances over four stages and, with a beach (nearby), you'll also find surf competitions, volleyball and more than a smattering of VW campervans.
"It's surrounded by vineyards, so the wine is guaranteed never to run out and Southern Hemisphere sunshine should also be on tap."
Other spots in the world to celebrate the beginning of 2009 follow the glowing review. Tignes, a French ski resort, and Edinburgh for Hogmanay, trail Gisborne in the list, as does Krakow in Poland.
